MONITORING
AVIAN PRODUCTIVITY AND SURVIVORSHIP (MAPS) PROGRAM. One
Supervisory Field Biologist
needed to train and supervise interns operating constant effort
mistnetting and banding (MAPS) stations in the Northwest region
(Washington or Oregon), 1 May through 8 August, 2002. Applicants
must have previous experience with the MAPS protocol, and advanced
skills in bird banding, birdsong identification and habitat
structure assessment. The applicant should also have an excellent
detailed working knowledge of the plumages and molts of at least
all northwest species of North American landbirds. Preference
will be given to those with a BS in Biology or related natural
resources field. Demonstrated leadership skills, attention to
detail, good physical condition, a tolerance of long days that
begin before dawn and the ability to endure sometimes difficult
field conditions are required. The salary is $1900 per month.

Many Field
Biologist Interns (49 positions)
are needed to operate constant effort mistnetting and banding
(MAPS) stations in the Northwest region (Alaska, Montana, Washington,
and Oregon), California, the Western Midwest/Texas region (Kansas,
Missouri, and Texas), and the Eastern Midwest/East region (Indiana,
Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts). Interns are
accepted into a given region and, after training, are assigned
to a specific location. Internships are from 1 May (23 Apr in
TX, 21 Apr in southern CA) through 8 August. Join this continent-wide,
cutting edge effort to determine the vital rates that cause
changes in North American landbird populations. Although some
prior birding experience is necessary, prior banding experience
is not necessary. All internships include an intensive, two
week training course in mistnetting, banding, and aging and
sexing small landbirds. Flexibility, good physical condition,
a tolerance of long days that begin before dawn and the ability
to endure sometimes difficult field conditions are required.
Applicants with good field vehicles are especially needed. A
per diem ranging from approximately $408 to $896 per month (depending
on location and experience) for food and other out-of-pocket

vegetation in North Cascades National Park and Olympic National
Park in Washington state, and possibly additional sites in California.
Must be familiar with, or able to learn quickly, the songs and
calls of western montane landbirds. Seeking applicants in excellent
physical condition with a willingness to backpack to remote
sites and camp out most nights. Knowledge of western montane
flora is a plus, as is a personal vehicle. Shared housing and
on the job mileage reimbursement provided along with a per diem
of $32 for food and general living expenses (amounts to $800

communities at roadside survey points throughout the Sierra Nevada
mountains of California. Experience identifying plants is required;
knowledge of Sierra flora strongly desired. Seeking applicants
willing to camp out most nights, and to live a nomadic existence
for the summer-- there will be no base camp. Personal vehicle
a plus. Great opportunity for friends or couples, but solo applicants

southern Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Previous field
experience required; experience surveying owls strongly preferred.
Position entails working at night, sometimes in harsh weather,
occasionally backpacking to remote sites, and camping out most
nights. Rugged personal vehicle is a strong plus. Great opportunity
for friends or couples, but solo applicants are also welcome.
