PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION: The Division of
Environmental Assessment exists to provide the Department of
Environmental Protection with scientific and technical advice
relating to water quality and water quality issues, especially
biological aspects.
ROLE OF THE POSITION: The primary purpose of
this position is to conduct water quality monitoring and research
in Maine's estuarine and marine waters. The position supervises
technical personnel and provides support in the work of the
Marine and Environmental Monitoring Program and the Surface
Water Ambient Toxics Program. The employee will be responsible
for assisting in the development and implementation of biological
assessment methods and criteria for estuarine and marine waters,
and coastal wetlands; conducting research related to the effects
of activities and contamination in marine systems; organizing
and analyzing data; reviewing permits; and reporting research
results to address state and federal water quality program needs.
Duties also include helping to oversee data management, as well
as updating the Coastal webpage.
REQUIREMENTS: In order to qualify, you must
have a Bachelors Degree in Biology or directly related field
AND three (3) years experience in laboratory or field research
in a field directly related to water quality monitoring, including
experience in a supervisory capacity. Directly related experience
may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. Additionally,
you must demonstrate competency in the areas listed in the Application
Information section of this Bulletin.

In addition to the standard application form,

your education and work experience in the areas of water quality
assessment, research, and marine and estuarine biology. Focus
particularly on your field experience in marine and estuarine
biology. Give examples of your experience in developing and
conducting scientific projects and research studies; your ability
to complete them in a timely manner; and your ability to communicate
environmental information to supervisors, staff, other professionals,
and the public. Describe your supervisory experience. Describe
your experience in working with multiple stakeholders on sensitive
environmental issues. Give examples of the types of analyses
you've conducted, your experience in the management of data,
and your use of statistical methods as well as graphic presentation.
Describe other skills or qualities that you possess that may
be relevant to the position (e.g. professional certifications,
field or laboratory training, software/hardware training, GIS
training, etc.).
