Staff Attorney
Riverkeeper, Inc.

Background
Riverkeeper is a not-for-profit public interest environmental organization dedicated to protecting the commercial, recreational, ecological and aesthetic qualities of the Hudson River and its watershed and tributaries. The organization is a surviving corporation that resulted from the 1992 merger with the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association, Inc., a private conservation organization founded by fishermen in 1966 to gather, study, and disseminate information about the ecology of the Hudson River. In order to effectuate its purpose, Riverkeeper, on behalf of its members, actively supports the enforcement of the Federal Clean Water Act (CWA) and New York’s Environmental Conservation Law, as well as many other environmental statutes and regulations.

Responsibilities
This position will focus on development and pollution issues affecting the Hudson River Valley. Riverkeeper is active on a full spectrum of environmental issues to ensure that the Hudson River is afforded full conservation protection. Many of these issues include monitoring and challenging Department of Environmental Conservation and Army Corps of Engineers permitting of projects posing potential threats to the River. Other issues include initiating Clean Water Act citizen suits against illegal dischargers.

Responsibilities of the position include participation in all facets of federal and state administrative advocacy, including writing comments and appeals, representing Riverkeeper at public meetings and hearings, developing coalitions, and conducting media outreach. The attorney will also be responsible for developing, managing, and litigating cases in federal and state forums.

Qualifications
Requirements for the position include a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection, admission or application to the New York bar, a solid academic record, excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, a strong work ethic, and an ability to manage a case docket through a mixture of independent work and close collaboration with other lawyers and staff members as a part of an effective team. Familiarity with administrative law and procedure and one year of environmental law experience is preferable. The position will also require a moderate amount of driving, so it is preferable that applicants own or have access to their own automobiles.

Compensation
Salary for the Staff Attorney position is $40,000. Riverkeeper offers an excellent vacation and benefits package.

Executive Assistant

Position Description: The Executive Assistant's primary responsibility is to assist and support the Executive Director (ED) in his duties as Riverkeeper's chief advocate and chief executive officer.

The principal duties of the Executive Assistant (EA) include:
· developing and managing ED's schedule
· responding to verbal and written inquiries
· aiding in developing outside relationships and partnerships
· conducting basic research
· drafting correspondence, memoranda, manuals and other organizational materials
· assuming select managerial responsibilities on behalf of ED
· executing and/or overseeing select programs or projects
· performing general administrative tasks (e.g., filing, copying, faxing, database entry, expense reimbursement)

Location: Garrison, NY
Job Type: Full time (40 hours/week)

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be energetic, efficient, well-organized, independent, hard-working, reliable, trustworthy and mature. The EA will have a strong interest in public interest work and share the Executive Director's commitment to building a highly professional and effective organization. The successful candidate will have superior writing skills, a good sense of humor, an easy-going, forthright manner and the ability and willingness to work long hours, often under pressure. Proficiency with computer programs and in internet research a must. Media/publicity experience a strong plus.
