ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT
- IPSWICH/NEWBURY MANAGEMENT UNIT

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Ipswich/Newbury Management Unit The Ipswich/Newbury Management Unit covers nearly 3,000 acres in the northeastern Massachusetts towns of Ipswich, Essex, Newbury, and Wenham. The Unit is comprised of The Crane Estate (1,398 acres) which includes Castle Hill and Crane Beach in Ipswich and the Crane Wildlife Refuge (680 acres) in Essex. The Management Unit also includes Greenwood Farm (213 acres) and the Hamlin Reservation (135 acres) in Ipswich; Old Town Hill (510 acres) in Newbury and the Pine and Hemlock Knoll (14 acres) in Wenham. The properties, which are open to the public, contain historic structures and landscapes, prime agricultural land, as well as a wide diversity of natural features including a barrier beach, coastal marshes and other wetlands, forests, and fields.

General Responsibilities
Reporting to the Superintendent of the Ipswich/Newbury Management unit, the Assistant Superintendent (AS) is a full-time exempt employee. At the Crane Estate, which includes Castle Hill and Crane Beach, the AS performs landscape and building maintenance, assists in the management of Crane Beach, and is responsible for effectively managing full-time regular and seasonal staff. At other Management Unit properties the AS is involved with the management of natural and historic landscapes and structures, as well as areas composed primarily of woodlands and fields.

Responsibilities by Property
Castle Hill
· Supervises one full-time staff person and a 12 person summer landscape/maintenance crew.
· With the Superintendent and others, the AS plans and implements an effective landscape management program which includes the maintenance of turf, ornamental trees and shrubs and woodland management.
· Works closely with staff and volunteers at Castle Hill to provide assistance and accomplish projects relating to private events and public programs.
· Insures that grounds maintenance equipment is in good working order through preventative maintenance and coordination with the Equipment Supervisor.

Crane Beach
· With the Superintendent, supervises all aspects of the beach operation including: public safety, maintenance, and visitor service staff.
· In addition, supervises and performs maintenance at Crane Beach involving dune restoration, the repair of fences, boardwalks and signs, as well as litter removal.
· Works with Membership Director and Superintendent to maximize the number of new and renewing members.

Crane Wildlife Refuge
· Supervises and performs routine grounds maintenance including mowing and trimming.
· Supervises and performs some building maintenance projects including interior and exterior painting.
· Performs invasive species control and tree and brush border removal to maintain and improve wildlife habitat.
· Maintains fields and vistas and implements recommendations of the refuge master plan.

Greenwood Farm, Old Town Hill Reservation, Hamlin Reservation, and Pine and Hemlock Knoll
· Supervises and performs routine, grounds, trail and vista maintenance.

Education and Experience
The AS must have an associate degree or higher in park management or related field, plus landscape operation, turf management, forestry or similar field related experience. Experience in a building trade is a plus. The AS should have a minimum of three (3) years experience in progressively responsible supervisory positions.

The AS must have a basic knowledge of arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, turf management and an ability to maintain historic landscapes. Applicants must be able to implement management programs involving the use, care, and maintenance of farm and garden vehicles and machinery.

Special skills sought:
· Proven leadership and management skills.
· Proficiency with a variety of equipment including; chainsaws, mowers, tractors, chippers, boats, etc.
· An ability to generate enthusiasm and participate as an effective team member.
· Ability to work with the public, volunteers, community officials, and other Trustees employees.
· Proven ability to work independently.
· Proven ability to complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines.
· Excellent oral communication skills including ease of public speaking.
· The ability to evaluate visual quality.
